A family of six who attempted to fly on just three tickets were kicked off the plane by flight attendants.

The parents had bought a ticket for their three-year-old son but not for their 20-month-old twins or eight-month-old baby. They planned to seat one infant in the same seat as their three-year-old and each hold a child in their lap.

The Fickes family boarded a U.S Airways flight from Charlotte in North Carolina to Chicago to visit grandparents over Christmas.

Kathy and Jason Fickes had purchased
three tickets and managed to make their way passed the ticket desk and
through security screening with their four children.

However once they got on the plane, a flight attendant told them it would not be possible to travel as they had planned because there were not enough oxygen masks to go around.

Mrs Fickes told ABC 7: ‘I felt we were discriminated against because we had too many children in their eyes.’

Mr Fickes added that they ‘held up the
plane for 40 or 50 minutes’ as the family moved seats and tried to
accommodate the airline.

They were finally asked to leave the plane despite one passenger offering to pay for another ticket.

On the U.S Airways website, it is only possible to buy tickets for children over the age of two.

However in a sidebar it gives the option to add how many younger children will be travelling.

The airline is clear that each child under the age of two must be accompanied by an over-18 if they are sharing a seat.

On domestic flights, a child under the age of two is allowed to travel in the lap of a paying adult free of charge.

The Federal Aviation Administration also states that there must be an oxygen mask for each flyer.

Michelle Mohr, a U.S. Airways spokesman told ABC 7: ‘The safety regulations are such that you have to have one child per one adult.’

U.S. Airways refunded the family’s tickets.

The Fickes family would have been permitted to fly if they had bought a ticket for one of their children under two as long as the child travelled in a car seat.

I would imagine there was no way that two small children would share a seat even if it was allowed by the airline. Either these parents did not think or they were betting on them being allowed to use an empty seat. The last transatlantic flight flight I took was hell on earth. Two badly behaved children behind kicking the seat and an obese woman in front who reclined her seat so far back that I had no leg room at all. Luckily a stewardess moved my husband, adult daughter and myself to an empty row further back as she could see we were just stoically putting up with it. That was American airlines and we could not fault the staff or the airline just some of the passengers.

Here we go again, people breaking rules that are there for the safety of everyone, yelling discrimination at the drop of a hat. When are these idiots going to take responsibility for themselves and their action, or in this case their offspring’s. Having kids and flying is not a match made in heaven and it usually turns into hell for the rest of the passengers. Rent a van and drive. Give us all a break.

Sorry but I don’t feel sorry for them. They should’ve had to purchase a ticket for all of them except the 8 month old baby.

A delay of 40 to 50 minutes can be crucial for passengers having to change flights when arriving at Chicago. Definitely a negative scenario and also stressful for the children who depend on their mother to exercise common sense.

når more parents that cant take responsabilty !
they should be greatful for being kicked off and money retuned ! what if there was a accident ? its not just you on that plan there are others!!!!
and would they put 2 kids in one car seat ?? no you dont !

This airline policy of kids sitting on parents laps, and siblings. Yea right. The first thing that happens after the seat belt light goes off these cheap parents let their little angels loose to terrorize other passengers because the parents don’t want the kids on their laps the whole flight.
First place these angles head for is the bathroom, in which they spend hours in playing with all the gadgets flushing the toilet constantly while passenger are getting backed up waiting for mummies and daddies spawn’s play time to be over.
Then the parents are asked by the crew to control their children, then the other passengers get the dirty looks and comments from the parents.
Airlines should have holiday flights with children allowed and flights with no children. Just because you love your kids doesn’t mean I should be forced to.

This is why everyone needs a ticket. Babies and toddlers need car seats just like in a car. That way there is an oxygen mask for each person on board.

It’s the parents own fault for being so stupid in the first place! The rules are their for their own and their children’s safety in an emergency and if they weren’t so ignorant they’d have realised and booked the flights properly and realised they needed 3 over 18’s. No sympathy for them.

SHAME ‘BIG MAN’ WASNT ABOUT!!!!!

At least US Airways refunded their tickets. That’s a rarity within itself.
