Fair go under threat: Swan

Australia’s notion of a fair go is under threat as billionaires try to sabotage public policy, the federal government says.

Treasurer Wayne Swan says resource tycoons including Clive Palmer, Gina Rinehart and Andrew Forrest are using their wealth to exert too much influence.

“They get a very good reward for what they do, but this country needs to be concerned about where the fair go is going, when people are spending large amounts of private cash to try and sabotage public policy,” Mr Swan told ABC Television on Monday night.

Mr Swan said a number of individuals were using their wealth to campaign against the mining tax, but were seeking to cloak their self-interest in the national interest.

He called for a national debate that went “beyond a couple of billionaires”.

“If we want to be the country with the fair go and we want to see the opportunities spread fairly from the opportunities that come from the mining boom, then we have to be awake to the tactics that people particularly like Mr Palmer,” he said.

“I’m talking about something new and I think something that is quite insidious.

“And that is the rise of a group of individuals who are prepared to use enormous amounts of wealth to distort a public purpose openly and in full confrontation with the government.

“That might be their right, but I think the Australian people ought to know what’s going on.”

Mr Swan said there was a lot at stake as the country grew wealthier.

“It’s very important that we continue to grow, and it’s also very important we continue to share fairly the bounty of this great country,” he said.

“That’s why I’m opening this argument at the moment because I do think it’s under threat.”
