The world’s largest social network can be part of sustainable development solutions, said Facebook Brazil’s Leonardo Tristão on stage at Rio+Social Tuesday.

Facebook’s work, however, is not done yet. Tristão says we still need a more connected world.

“We’re going to need to argue for the global solutions we need and want to leave for our grandsons and for the next generations,” he said.

Tristão presented examples of several organizations that use their Facebook Pages as a platform to foster community and create movements.

“Today we have many organizations and individuals doing great things on Facebook,” Tristão said. “We believe we can be a part of the solution to the problems that exist today. Through Facebook Pages, organizations can connect and engage with their audiences.”

Other speakers on stage at Rio+Social echoed the need for increased global connectivity, which provides for better communication. Sergio Fernandez de Cordova, founder of the Pvblic Foundation, argued that money can never have the influence of a strong voice.

“There’s not enough money on Earth to solve every problem, but there is enough media,” he said. “The ability to connect through social platforms gives us a seat at the U.N.’s table for Rio+20.”

On a similar note, Brittany Trilford, the 17-year-old winner of the Date With History competition, said that technology is the tool that can now give the youth a voice.

“We have two ears and one mouth for a reason and I demand that world leaders listen to us,” she said. “We the youth, we are powerful, we are strong, we have tools and technologies to organize ourselves in big, strong, powerful ways.”

Are Fernandez de Cordova and Trilford right — does technology give the young generation a voice they never had before? Let us know in the comments or tweet to us using the hashtag #rioplussocial.
