Facebook tops most-searched-for terms in the US for third time straight

Social networking site Facebook was the most searched-for term in the US in 2011 for the third time in a row.

“Facebook” accounted for 3.10 percent of all searches made in 2011, said analytics firm Experian Hitwise, an increase of 46 percent year-on-year.

“Four variations of the term ‘facebook’ were among the top 10 terms and accounted for 4.42 percent of searches overall, a 24 percent increase from 2010,” reported Experian Hitwise in its annual search term recap, published on December 21.

Facebook was also the most visited website for the year, coming in ahead of Google, YouTube and Yahoo Mail.

Google-owned video sharing site YouTube ranked second on Experian Hitwise’s most-searched terms of 2011 and was followed by “Facebook login,” web-based classifieds site “Craigslist,” “facebook.com,” “Yahoo” and online auction site “eBay.” “www.facebook.com,” driving directions site “MapQuest” and “yahoo.com” also featured in the list.

“Navigational searches dominated the top search results as users typed in terms versus typing in the URL in the browser bar,” said Simon Bradstock, general manager of Experian Hitwise. “Hitwise saw 11 percent growth of single-word searches in 2011 as terms like ‘face’ and ‘you’ made the top 50 searches.”

Searches for celebrities and natural disasters were also popular in 2011. Microsoft noted a similar trend on its search engine Bing when it released its top searches for the year in late November.

Pop star Justin Bieber was the most searched-for person on Bing in 2011 and searches for Hurricane Irene, the Japan earthquake and tsunami, and the Joplin Tornado featured in Bing’s top ten news stories in the US in 2011.

Justin Bieber was also at the top of public figure searches in the US, according to Experian Hitwise, and was ranked 92nd most popular overall search term.

“Other top 2011 searches reflect ongoing fascination with celebrities online, and many of the top fast-moving searches centered on natural disasters or notable personalities passing away,” said Bradstock.
