Facebook co-founder buys The New Republic magazine

NEW YORK (AP) — Chris Hughes, one of Facebook‘s co-founders, is buying a majority stake in The New Republic, a magazine founded nearly a century ago.

Hughes, 28, will serve as the magazine’s publisher and editor-in-chief. In a letter to New Republic readers, Hughes said the magazine “has been and will remain a journal of progressive values, but it will above all aim to appeal to independent thinkers on the left and the right.”

He said he shares the vision of the magazine’s founders, who “chose to strike out and pursue their vision in spite of the prevailing opinions of their time. They saw a need for a magazine of informed opinion and insightful, thorough reporting.”

Now, Hughes wrote in his letter, “people are once again skeptical that quality journalism can flourish. Technology’s disruption of traditional forms of media has led many to believe that independent, thoughtful media institutions are on the decline and that there are not enough readers to support serious reporting and analysis.”

He thinks the rise of tablets and mobile reading devices offers a good time to reinvigorate in-depth journalism for which people still thirst.

“In the next era of The New Republic, we will aggressively adapt to the newest information technologies without sacrificing our commitment to serious journalism,” he wrote.

After helping Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskowitz start Facebook in 2004, Hughes left Facebook and joined Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2007. He later founded Jumo.com, a social network to connect nonprofits with people who want to help them. Jumo was acquired by Good, another platform for nonprofits.

Based in Washington, The New Republic was founded 90 years before Facebook with the mission to provide readers with “an intelligent, stimulating and rigorous examination of American politics, foreign policy and culture,” according to its website.

Financial terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
