When Fabio Capello quit as England football manager last week, he did not seem unduly bothered.
Nor, for that matter, did his bosses at the Football Association, the players or even the fans.
But there is at least one person who bitterly regrets the Italian’s departure: his professional lookalike Mike Coats.
Second career: Mike Coats, left, believes his money-spinning lookalike days are over after Capello, right, quit as England manager
Since Capello took the job in 2008, Mr Coats had enjoyed a lucrative second career. The 54-year-old, from Yeovil, appeared in adverts and turned on the Christmas lights in his home town.
But Mr Coats, whose main job is as a graphic designer at helicopter firm AgustaWestland, admits to being ‘gutted’ when he heard Capello, 65, had walked out over the John Terry captaincy row. He said: ‘There is a sense of loss that I no longer have this pseudo-celebrity. I’m sure the work will dry up.’
Mr Coats, who even bought hair curlers to get the famous Capello frizz, never got to meet the man himself but said: ‘I’m not sure he is the sort of person who would pose with a lookalike.’
He added: ‘My wife liked it but my 23-year-old daughter was a bit embarrassed by it all. I am sure she is happy he quit as England boss.’
No hesitation: England manager Fabio Capello quite over the FA’s decision to strip defender John Terry, right, of the captain’s armband
