Extinction Rebellion protesters brought roads in central London to a halt on Monday, emboldened by a recent Supreme Court ruling in favour of demonstrators. Hundreds of activists from the climate change group gathered in the capital at the start of two weeks of action aimed at persuading the Government to stop new investment in fossil fuels. Roads around Trafalgar Square were blocked by protesters, including one group who used a truck to position a 10ft tall pink table at a busy interchange. The huge object, fitted with sleeping quarters and a sound system, bore the slogan Come to the Table – Change Is Now.
Extinction Rebellion began a 10-day-action-plan in Oslo on Monday which will take place throughout the Scandinavian countries. On Monday morning around 150 activists began a sit-in at the Norwegian oil ministry, while there was a rally nearby the Royal Palace, along with a number of other acts. “We can’t keep searching for oil the same way as we do. We need to find a way to phase it out. So that is why I am here today to demonstrate and to take direct action because nothing else seems to be sufficient to create the change that we need politically,” said student Eskil Roll-Hansen. Norwegian energy minister Tina Bru responded to the groups plans. “We’ll never succeed in the fight against climate change if we scrap democracy on the way,” stated Bru. Various rallies were planned on Monday and in the coming days to denounce the impact of the oil industry in one of the main oil producers in Europe.
