Expo space to be built on Glebe Island

A temporary exhibition space is to be built on Sydney’s Glebe Island to cover for the closure of the soon to be redeveloped Darling Harbour convention centre.

Planning Minister Brad Hazzard on Monday announced that the NSW government would seek expressions of interest from the private sector to build the interim facility on the island.

To be named Glebe Island Expo, the pavilion would boast 15,000 square metres of space with a further 10,000 square metres made available for large exhibitions and trade shows.

It would host events from December 2013 to the later part of 2016 while the Darling Harbour redevelopment was underway.

The exhibition industry generated more than $100 million each year to the state’s economy, Mr Hazzard said.

“Only part of the site will be required for the interim facility … and exhibitions will co-exist with other port users,” he said in a statement.

The government had been consulting with the community and stakeholders on future uses through the Bays Precinct and the interim use of Glebe Island would see improvements, including a likely ferry service, to the site, Mr Hazzard said.

Sydney Business Chamber executive director Patricia Forsythe said news that a temporary facility would be built “put to rest” fears that the city would not be able to accommodate the exhibition industry while the convention centre was being redeveloped.

“This is a sensible use of the space at Glebe Island and will ensure that Sydney will still be open for business while our convention and exhibition space in Darling Harbour undergoes a much-needed overhaul,” Ms Forsythe said in a statement.
