Explosives target coalition convoy in southern Iraq

An improvised explosive device yesterday targeted a convoy providing logistical support for the international coalition forces in Al-Muthanna Governorate, southern Iraq, Anadolu reported citing a local security source.

A police captain in Al-Muthanna told the agency that “an explosive device, planted by unknown persons has exploded in a convoy of trucks carrying logistical equipment for the international coalition on the highway in Al-Muthanna Governorate”.

The source, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media, added that the attack did not cause any injuries or damage, noting that authorities had launched an investigation into the incident.

No party has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The explosion comes hours after unidentified persons launched an attack with two booby-trapped drones on Erbil airport, the capital of the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, without causing injuries or damage.

In recent months, unknown persons have launched repeated attacks on the US embassy building and international coalition forces throughout Iraq, in an effort to push them out of the country.
