Experts rap London Olympic missiles

The MoD has confirmed that six sites, including two residential blocks of flats, would be tested as launch pads for missile systems in order to combat air threats during the 2012 Olympic Games.

Nevertheless, military experts have raised concerns over the usefulness of the missiles in poor weather saying the missile systems rely on the operator being able to see their target, reported The Telegraph on Tuesday 1 May.

“The system’s weakness is that the missiles are laser-guided, steered onto their target by the soldier keeping his sight on an aircraft. So if the soldier can’t see an aircraft, they can’t hit it,” said Nick Brown, editor in chief of IHS Jane’s International Defense Review.

Furthermore, concerns were also raised that deploying missiles on residential sites such as Fred Wigg would be a security risk for people living there and nearby.

Military liaison officer Lieutenant Colonel Brian said there was a the “risk” that people could be killed by debris from a plane being targeted or that flats could be targeted because of the missiles deployed on their roof tops.
