‘Exile Assad scenario a joke’

Iran supports the Assad reform plans and the talks about forcing him to go into exile are doomed to failure, Amir-Abdollahian said on Sunday.

He made the remarks in Jordan’s capital, Amman, where he extended President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s invitation to King Abdullah II to attend the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran from August 26 to 31.

The Iranian official warned that any attack on Syria would be a folly and added that Assad should be given enough time to implement his reform plan.

He said Tehran condemns any foreign intervention in Syria and believes that sending weapons to the country is dangerous.

Iran supports efforts to find a solution to the Syria crisis and will help Assad implement his reforms.

Amir-Abdollahian urged regional countries to pay attention to the demands of their people and said political solutions are the only way to emerge from crises not the military option.

The anti-Syria Western regimes have been calling for Assad to step down, but Russia and China remain strongly opposed to the Western drive to oust Assad.

On July 6, Hillary Clinton warned Russia and China over their support for Syria and said Moscow and Beijing “will pay a price” for their stance toward the Syrian issue.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of many people, including security forces.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
