Ex-NI chief given hacking probe details

Brooks, who was forced to resign as News International chief executive last July, is to face fresh police interviews, after it was revealed that the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) was probing an evident association between the senior Metropolitan officer and News International’s chief.

The fresh allegations came only two days after Murdoch launched the Sun on Sunday to replace the defunct News of the World that was closed after 168 years in the wake of phone hacking scandal at the paper.

Scotland Yard Police have been condemned for the failure of 2006 investigation to discover evidence that hacking went beyond a single rogue reporter.

Murdoch and News International recently came under fresh pressure over bribe allegations at the Sun and phone hacking at the News of the World. NI was earlier this week accused in court documents of planning to delete and prepare to delete its email archive after the hacking allegations and proceedings against the publisher increased in 2009 and 2010.

The IPCC spokesman said that it is to probe “an allegation of inappropriate disclosure of information by a serving Metropolitan Police officer during the original phone hacking investigation in 2006.”

“After careful consideration of the circumstances in this case it has been decided that suspending this officer, who is based within Specialist Operations, or restricting his duties would not be appropriate. This will obviously be kept under review,” the spokesman added.

The phone hacking scandal is certain to be long-running and grip the British society for longer than expected as it is the cover-up that brings the scandal back to the surface.
