Evidence shows UK complicit in torture

While the British governments have repeatedly denied that British agents were involved in the practice, The Sunday Telegraph said it has seen classified documents that show London has been lying.

According to the paper, the MI6 both submitted vital intelligence and provided support to the CIA during rendition of suspects and allowed one of its airbases to be used by the US spy agency for illegal rendition operations.

The MI6 has also been closely linked to Muammar Gaddafi’s intelligence arm the ESO.

During secret operations in collaboration with the CIA and ESO, the Diego Garcia island, which is a British sovereign territory in the Indian Ocean, served as a pit stop for flights that transferred those illegally detained to Libya.

This comes as formerly British Foreign Secretary David Miliband had told the Commons that Diego Garcia was only twice used for rendition operations without Britain’s knowledge.

Meanwhile, Europe minister in the current administration David Lidington reassured the Commons that the 2002 cases revealed by Miliband were the only cases where Diego Garcia was used for rendition operations.

Yet the uncovered documents clearly show that Britain did use the Indian Ocean territory in 2004 in a joint operation with the CIA and ESO to arrest and extradite anti-Gaddafi activist Abdelhakim Belhadj to Libya.

After Belhadj was handed over to the Libyans, the then MI6 counter-terrorism director Sir Mark Allen sent a letter to the ESO chief Moussa Koussa that further sheds light on the nature of London-Tripoli ties and their collaboration in rendition processes.

“I congratulate you on the safe arrival of Abu Abd Allah Sadiq [Mr Belhadj]. This was the least we could do for you and for Libya to demonstrate the remarkable relationship we have built over the years,” the letter read.

Following the revelations, Cori Crider, the legal director of Reprieve, which is a leading global human rights organization, said the new documents expose the government’s lies to the parliament.

“The files show that the renditions were part of a package deal. We’re all waiting to see a minister step up and take responsibility for what was clearly planned at the highest levels of government,” he said.
