EU warns Greece to stick to austerity

Speaking for the first time after Greece’s Sunday elections, which saw a victory for anti-austerity Syriza party, EU Commission’s President Jose Manuel Barroso urged Greek leaders to ‘act responsibly’ and follow the tough budget plan defined in its bailout deal.

“What member states have to do is be consistent, implementing the policies that they have agreed,” Barroso said, adding, “Now, the key is implementation.”

The warning comes after the leader of Greece’s left-wing Syriza party, Alexis Tsipras, said on Tuesday that his team would rule out all budget-cutting austerity measures, which were imposed under an EU-International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout deal.

Barroso also discounted the possibility of revising EU’s economic policy commitments, saying, “It would be completely demagogical and not serious to propose to some of our member states to relax now the efforts of fiscal consolidation.”

He also said that continual debt reduction was necessary to encourage markets, boost confidence and slash borrowing costs.

“Every euro spent on interest payments is a euro less for jobs and investment,” added Barroso.

A leading German politician also warned Greece that it would not receive a cent more aid unless the debt-stricken country respects the conditions of its international bailout.

“The agreements must be respected. I don’t think we can or should renegotiate,” said Martin Schulz, the German president of the European parliament.

Greek voters, angry about the high unemployment rate and severe cuts to pensions and pay, punished the pro-austerity parties, New Democracy and Pasok, for imposing the harsh austerity measures to address the country’ debt crisis.

Greece is the epicenter of the eurozone debt crisis and in its fifth year of recession. One in five workers is unemployed and banks are in a shaky situation, while pensions and salaries have been slashed by up to 40 percent.
