EU parl. OKs US passenger data deal

The agreement was reached by 409 votes to 226 with 33 abstentions during a parliament session in Strasbourg, France on Thursday.

Liberal members of the parliament believe that the accord is an invasion of privacy that can lead to false arrests of EU citizens.

Those in favor of the deal say that it provides more security and protection for passengers flying from Europe to America.

According to the agreement, airliners must submit passengers’ data including names, contact details, credit details, luggage information and passengers’ seat numbers to US authorities before departure.

The US can retain the data for up to 15 years. However, passengers’ names and addresses will be deleted after six months.

The US ambassador to the EU, William Kennard, hailed the vote, saying collected passenger data “has aided nearly every high profile US terrorist investigation in recent years.”
