‘EU liable for Iran oil sales cut’

The Iranian ambassador to Sweden says Iran’s move to halt oil exports to certain European countries was triggered by the EU’s hasty measures and reckless decisions.

In a Wednesday meeting with Bjorn Lyrvall, the director general for Political Affairs of Sweden’s Foreign Ministry, Rasoul Eslami said Iran made the decision in reaction to EU’s move to impose an oil embargo on Tehran.

The Islamic Republic’s move was the outcome of the EU hasty measures and decisions. Countries which imposed sanctions against Iran are accountable for the economic pressure and mounting dissatisfaction among the crisis-hit European nations, he added.

The ambassador also pointed out that Tehran can easily find new oil buyers and will never sit and wait for the EU sanctions.

On Sunday, Iran’s Oil Ministry announced that it had cut oil exports to British and French firms.

Iran also hinted at the possibility of a halt in oil exports to certain other European countries.

The move came in retaliation for a decision by EU foreign ministers on January 23 to stop oil imports from Iran, freeze the assets of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) within EU states and ban selling diamonds, gold, and other precious metals to Tehran.

The US, Israel and some of their European allies accuse Iran of pursuing a clandestine weapons program. Tehran argues that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
