EU leaders promote extremism: Poll

The survey, conducted from April 26 to May 5, suggests that nearly 60% (2,979 people) of the 4,980 participants believe that hardline ideas of some EU leaders such as UK’s David Cameroon, Germany’s Angela Merkel and France’s Nicholas Sarkozy have significantly contributed to the birth and spread of extremism.

According to the poll, nearly 34% (1,704 people) of the respondents said the growing population of immigrants has changed Europe’s sociocultural structure.

Meanwhile, 6% of those polled (297 people) believe that lenient criminal sentences have triggered far-right extremism and terrorism across the continent.

This comes as Norway’s mass killer is expected to get 21 years in jail for killing dozens of civilians.

Meanwhile, a new report by anti-racism group ‘Hope Not Hate’ showed that the UK is one of Europe’s most active countries with regard to the spread of anti-Islam extremism, with 22 anti-Islam groups now operating in the country, according to the Guardian.

The report was released one day before the trial of Anders Breivik, Norway’s anti-Islam mass murderer, who has confessed to slaying 77 people.

English Defence League (EDL) has also been identified by the report as one of the key movement fueling anti-Islam extremism.
