nsnbc : The European Union has imposed new sanctions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea a.k.a. North Korea for developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.
Foreign ministers of the European Union on Monday, adopted a set of new sanctions against North Korea including a complete ban on EU investment in the Democratic People’s Republic (DPRK) and a ban on the sale of refined petroleum products and crude oil.
The EU also cut back from 15,000 to 5,000 euros (equivalent to approximately $17,700 to 5,900) the amount of money people can send to North Korea.
The EU foreign ministers apparently believe that these “personal remittances” are used to back Pyongyang’s arms programs. At least that is what is being claimed – some say because it sounds better than admitting that the measure is designed to target already impoverished North Koreans to foster an anti-regime atmosphere.
The ministers also decided not to renew work permits for North Koreans working on their territories, apart from refugees and others in need of international protection, also a measure that targets individual citizens rather than the government, military, or the country’s considerable party/military-oligarchical complex.
Asset freezes and travel bans slapped on a further three people and six “entities,” which are usually companies or organizations are relatively minor measures compared to the sweeping sanctions that indiscriminately target the most citizens.
