“We in Germany are of the opinion, and so am I personally, that the fiscal pact is not negotiable. It has been negotiated and has been signed by 25 countries,” Merkel told a news conference on Monday.
France’s president-elect Francois Hollande has hailed his victory as part of a movement rising against fiscal austerity in Europe and has promised to work on growth to put France and the eurozone on a new track.
The outcome of the French election, and the defeat of pro-austerity parties in the Greek parliamentary election on Sunday, has put the fate of restrictive policies aimed at resolving the eurozone debt and deficit crises in jeopardy.
Merkel also said that any new government in Greece must go ahead with the agreed structural reforms and austerity cuts in exchange for international bailouts
In order to secure a loan from the EU, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, Greece had to adopt harsh austerity measures, which have worsened its economic recession, leading to thousands of job losses.
