‘EU anti-Iran sanctions dictated by US’

“We think the European Union (EU) is following the position of the USA,” Pedro Guerreiro told Press TV.

“The recent sanctions the EU adopted against Iran were dictated by the US since they work as partners with a strategy to isolate Iran politically and economically. These policies were decided a long time ago,” he added.

Guerreiro also criticized policies adopted by US and its followers towards Iran’s nuclear program as imperialistic.

On the New Year’s Eve, the United States imposed new sanctions against Iran aimed at preventing other countries from importing Iran’s oil and doing transactions with its central bank.

European Union foreign ministers also approved sanctions against Iran on January 23, including a ban on Iranian oil imports, a freeze on the assets of the country’s Central Bank within EU states and a ban on selling diamonds, gold, and other precious metals to Tehran.

The United States, Israel and their European allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program and have used this pretext to push for international and unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran has rejected the Western publicity that its nuclear program may be diverted to military objectives while insisting that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to pursue nuclear technology for its numerous civilian uses and benefits.
