Ethicist Peter Singer honoured

A philosopher, ethicist, animal liberationist and someone once described by pro-life activists as “the most dangerous man on the planet” has received a new label – Companion of the Order of Australia.

Professor Peter Singer, who is also regarded as one of Australia’s most influential intellectuals and in 2004 was named Australian Humanist of the Year, received the appointment in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Prof Singer joins the Order of Australia for “eminent service to philosophy and bioethics as a leader of public debate and communicator of ideas in the areas of global poverty, animal welfare and the human condition”.

“I’m delighted to receive the recognition for what I do,” Prof Singer said.

Regarded by many as a pre-eminent thinker and renowned for his views on such issues as euthanasia and abortion, Prof Singer, 65, has served as Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University, New Jersey, since 1999 and has been Laureate Professor at Melbourne University’s Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics since 2005.

He is also a past Professor of Philosophy at Melbourne’s Monash University where he founded its Centre for Human Bioethics.

Outside the academic world he is acclaimed as the author in 1975 of the book Animal Liberation, considered a manual for animal rights activists.

Interviewed for a 2004 edition of the ABC’s Enough Rope, Prof Singer said his “most dangerous man” tag evolved from his criticism “of what people sometimes call the `sanctity of life’ view”.

“That is, the view that every human life, just because it’s human, is sacrosanct and must never be taken.

“I think that people who say they believe that are usually hypocrites.”

Acknowledging his appointment to the Order of Australia, Prof Singer said his major aim is to raise the level of ethical discussion on such issues as the treatment of animals, poverty and climate change.

He agreed his views can be seen as controversial.

“But I’m delighted they weren’t seen as a barrier to this award,” he said.
