Escaped jailbird flees into bush

A prisoner who escaped from a NSW jail has fled into bushland near the Victorian border, police say.

Convicted armed robber Mark Maukau, 23, absconded from a minimum security area of Goulburn Correctional Centre, in the Southern Highlands, on Friday afternoon.

It’s believed he then used a screwdriver to steal a Mazda from an elderly couple, before heading south.

He was sighted near Bombala, in southwest NSW, just before 6pm (AEDT), sparking a police pursuit which ended in Delegate, near the Victorian border.

Maukau gave police the slip and fled into bushland.

A perimeter has been set up and police are searching the area.
