‘Energy security pretext for occupation’

“Unfortunately, this issue (energy security) has been turned into a pretext … to occupy sovereign countries and to interfere in their internal affairs,” Jalili said at the St. Petersburg international security conference on Friday.

He said that energy security has in fact created insecurity across the globe as it has been used as a tool for invasion and military intervention.

The Iranian official went on to say that energy-consuming industrial countries resort to any measure and even illegal methods to meet their energy demand.

Jalili cited the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists by Israeli elements as an instance of using energy security as a tool by the hegemonic powers.

He said that Israel embarked on assassinating Iranian nuclear scientists in a bid to block Iran’s progress regardless of the fact that such killings reinforce the resolve of Iranian scientists to make progress.

He also described piracy and cyber attacks as other challenges facing the world today.

He described justice and respect for the rights of other nations as the requirements for a secure world.

Jalili, heading a delegation, arrived in Russia on Thursday to take part in St. Petersburg international security conference.

The security conference, which began on Thursday, discusses information security, international energy security as well as the fight against piracy.

Security officials from more than 70 countries and international organizations are participating in the two-day conference.

The Saint Petersburg meeting is the third international security conference hosted by Russia.

The first and the second meetings were held in the cities of Sochi and Yekaterinburg in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
