The Martin family travelled to Britain to visit Doreen Lawrence, mother of Stephen Lawrence who was murdered 19 years ago by a racist gang in South London. Two of Stephen’s murderers were finally imprisoned earlier this year.
Trayvon Martin was also killed in Stanford, Florida, in February after neighbourhood-watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot him in the chest assuming he was “up to no good.”
“The struggle of people like Doreen Lawrence in Britain shows us that as in the USA, there is a problem of racial profiling in society and amongst institutions,” said Trayvon’s parents.
“We would like to work with people here in London and around the world to help end the scourge of racial injustice across the globe,” they added.
The meeting of the two families comes as the British police are under fire after several cases of racial abuse by the British police were highlighted earlier this year.
Racism within the British police came under spotlight earlier this year after a mobile phone recording was published by The Guardian which showed a police officer abusing a black young man.
Several other cases of racial abuse by the British police were revealed afterwards, including a 28-year-old black firefighter who was shot with a Taser gun.
