Saudi Arabia has expressed its readiness to deploy special forces to Syria if the US-led coalition allegedly hitting Daesh militants decides to deploy ground troops.
“We will discuss details with experts from the countries involved to decide on the nature of the participation,” Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told reporters during a visit to Morocco on Wednesday.
The top Saudi diplomat, however, refrained from elaborating further on the issue.
On Monday, Jubeir held out the possibility of dispatching Saudi forces into Syria as part of the US-led coalition allegedly fighting Daesh in the conflict-hit Arab country.
“There is a discussion with regard to a ground force contingent, or a special forces contingent, to operate in Syria by this international US-led coalition against ISIS (Daesh) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has expressed its readiness to provide special forces to such operations should they occur,” he said during a visit to Washington.
The idea of Riyadh’s possible participation in ground operations in Syria was first raised on February 4 by Ahmed Asiri, a spokesman for the Saudi Defense Ministry.
Although swiftly welcomed by allies like the United States, the proposal was met with huge criticism from Syria and Damascus’ allies. Bahrain and the UAE also followed in Saudi Arabia’s footsteps and hinted their preparedness for similar deployments.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has spoken out against US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, calling her a “war hawk with bad judgment” who gets an “emotional rush out of killing people.”
“A vote today for Hillary Clinton is a vote for endless, stupid war,” Assange wrote via the @wikileaks Twitter account on Tuesday.
He added that he has “years of experience in dealing with Hillary Clinton and have read thousands of her cables. Hillary lacks judgment and will push the United States into endless wars which spread terrorism.”
Assange also highlighted Clinton’s “poor policy decisions,” which he said have “directly contributed” to the rise of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu pledged to return a “historical debt” to Turkey’s “Aleppo brothers” who helped defend the country in the early 20th century, just days after Russia warned of Ankara’s intentions to invade Syria as the rebels there falter.
“We will return our historic debt. At one time, our brothers from Aleppo defended our cities of Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, now we will defend the heroic Aleppo. All of Turkey stands behind its defenders,” Davutoglu said at the meeting of the Party of Justice and Development parliamentary faction, which he heads.
Davutoglu was apparently referring to World War One and subsequent events in the Turkish War of Independence, seemingly glorifying the defense and retaking of Turkish cities from the Allied forces. Yet, he failed to mention that the Turks had been drawn into the war by Ottoman imperial ambitions. Turkey had entered the conflict by shelling the Russian port of Odessa from the sea. It then suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Russian troops in the war’s southern theater, before the Ottoman Empire was occupied and divided by the Allies. At the time, the three cities Davutoglu named saw thousands of Armenians and other minorities slaughtered by Turkish nationalists as part of the Armenian Genocide, which Ankara denies to this day.

The 28-member trans-Atlantic military block, along with a number of European countries, is intentionally hyping up the “myth” that Russia allegedly poses a so-called “threat” to Sweden and the Baltic states, Russia’s Foreign Minister said.
“The leaders of NATO member states and a number of European countries, especially Britain, the Nordic countries, the Baltic counties neighboring us, Poland, Romania and some others, are whipping up ‘Russia’s threat’ myth, as well as the idea that we are planning to use our nuclear weapons to intimidate Sweden and the Baltic countries,” Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with the Moskovsky Komsomolets daily.

Chris Christie dropped out of the race for president on Wednesday afternoon, two hours after a rival candidate quit.
Carly Fiorina, one of only two women in the U.S. presidential race, left her quixotic pursuit of the White House on Wednesday after a seventh-place New Hampshire primary finish in a field of eight candidates.
And Christie, the governor of New Jersey, soon followed suit after rumors of his campaign’s demise swirled all day.
Spokeswoman Samantha Smith confirmed the news to the Associated Press, saying that Christie broke the news of his decision to staff at his campaign headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey, late in the afternoon.
Christie is also calling donors and supporters to thank them for staying the course as his poll numbers gasped for air.

Syrian Kurds liberate strategic airbase, several villages in N Syria
Syrian Kurdish forces have managed to capture a strategic airbase and a town in the northern Aleppo province after days of fierce clashes with Takfiri terrorists.
Forces from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), backed by popular forces, established control over the town of Minnigh (also Menagh) and its adjacent Minnigh Air Base after expelling the occupying foreign-backed militants from the area on Wednesday night, AFP reported on Thursday, citing the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
According to the UK-based rights group, the development came after days of heavy clashes between YPG fighters and terrorists of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front east of Minnigh. YPG forces first managed to liberate several villages east of Minnigh before reaching the town and freeing it in an overnight operation.
Takfiri terrorists “lost the only military airport they held in Aleppo province with the defeat at Minnigh,” the head of the rights group, Rami Abdel Rahman, said.
The Syrian government forces lost control of the airbase, which is on the road between Aleppo and the Turkish border, in early August 2013, when militants took it after almost a year-long siege.
The YPG has stated their desire to reestablish the link between Afrin, its stronghold in the region located some 15 kilometers (9 miles) east of Minnigh, and Kobani, another Syrian Kurdish town.
The foreign-backed conflict in Syria, which began in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 260,000 people and displaced almost half of the country’s population.
US creating ‘pool of blood’ in the region: Turkish president
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the United States is creating a “pool of blood” in the region by its support of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its military wing, People’s Protection Units (YPG).
“Hey America! We know these [organizations] very well. But as you have never recognized them (as terror groups) the region has turned into a pool of blood,” Erdogan said on Wednesday, in one of his regular speeches to provincial officials at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.
“Hey America! How many times have we had to tell you? Are you together with us or are you with the PYD and YPG terror groups? What kind of partnership is this? Is there a difference between the PKK [the Kurdistan Workers’ Party] and the PYD? Is there a difference with the YPG?” the Turkish president went on to say.
A day earlier, Ankara summoned the US envoy to Turkey, John Bass, to protest against the remarks by US State Department spokesman John Kirby, who has said that Washington does not see the PYD as a terrorist organization.
Ankara, however, considers the group as an ally of the PKK, which it has been battling for months, but to the US, the PYD is seen as part of the fight against the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group that is wreaking havoc in the region.
Kurdish groups like the PYD and YPG have been very successful in confronting Daesh. They also insist that their participation in peace talks on Syria could greatly contribute to the success of any political solution to the crisis in the Arab country.
According to reports, Ankara, along with some other US allies, namely Qatar and Saudi Arabia, has provided support for militants operating inside Syria, particularly Daesh.
