Employers of aged workers to get bonus

The federal government is hoping to make it easier for mature age Australians looking for work by offering employers a bonus to hire them.

In a bid to break down employment barriers for older Australians, Labor will offer a new jobs bonus of $1000 to 10,000 employers who recruit and retain a worker aged 50 years or over for more than three months.

The initiative will start from July 1 and cost $10 million over four years.

The announcement comes as the government prepares to release on Wednesday its response to the findings of a report into the economic potential of senior Australians chaired by businessman Everald Compton.

Treasurer Wayne Swan, who is preparing to hand down his fifth budget on May 8, said older Australians had built up a lifetime of skills and experience.

“If these Australians want to stay in the workforce, we should do everything we can to help that happen,’ Mr Swan said.

“It’s all about giving older Australians more choice, and the opportunity for some extra financial security if they want to keep bringing home a pay cheque in their later years.”

Mr Compton said Australia would only prosper if it recognised the attributes of mature aged Australians.

“We are wasting good experienced talent by not harnessing them in every way we can,” he said.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average duration of unemployment for people aged 45 to 54 is 52 weeks, and increases to 75 weeks for those aged 55 years and over.

That is up to twice the average duration of unemployment for other job seekers.

Employment Minister Bill Shorten said the demographics of the Australian workforce is changing, and to one that is working longer and to an older age.

“Longer life expectancy, better health and reward for cerebral work over brawn is favouring longer years in the workforce,” Mr Shorten said.

The bonus measure would make it easier for companies to support jobseekers who had a lifetime of experience with which to make a valuable contribution to Australian workplaces, he said.
