Emerson assures company tax cut doubters

The federal government might appear to be backing away from a proposed cut in the company tax rate, but cabinet minister Craig Emerson insists there is no “cause for concern”.

Treasurer Wayne Swan and Finance Minister Penny Wong have dodged questions about a commitment the government gave in March to introduce legislation for the tax cut during budget week.

The legislation was not on a list of bills approved by the Labor caucus on Monday.

The government had proposed cutting the corporate tax rate from 30 per cent to 29 per cent for small business from July 1 and for big business a year later.

The cuts were to be funded from the Minerals Resource Rent Tax (MRRT) which operates from July 1.

Dr Emerson said he would rather not comment on what would be in the budget because he did not want to pre-empt the treasurer’s speech later on Tuesday.

“But I don’t think there’s any cause for concern,” he told Sky News.

Dr Emerson echoed Mr Swan and Senator Wong’s sentiments that if the company tax legislation did not go ahead, it would be because of the opposition.

“(The coalition) are embarrassed about the idea of voting for a cut in the company tax rate.”

He said the coalition wanted to increase the rate to pay for its “very expensive” paid parental leave scheme.

The opposition has said it will oppose the tax cut because it is linked to the minerals resource rent tax. The Australian Greens want it limited to small business.

“We have made our position very clear, but the person who is fighting against it is (Opposition Leader) Tony Abbott,” Senator Wong said.
