Emergency WA fire warning downgraded

Authorities have downgraded a bushfire warning in Western Australia’s southwest but residents remain on high alert.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) has issued a “watch and act” warning for residents northwest of Ellis plantation in the shires of Donnybrook-Balingup and Nannup.

Residents have been told to activate their bushfire survival plans and motorists have been directed to keep clear of the area.

The fire started in the Ellis Plantation and has burnt 170 hectares.

It is travelling in a northwesterly direction.

More than 100 firefighters and 15 trucks will work through the night to strengthen containment lines, and five water bombing aircraft are on standby to assist on Tuesday.

“Crews have worked hard to establish containment lines around the fire. However, there are still unburnt pockets and active fire within the containment lines,” the DEC said in a statement late Monday.

Earlier, a bushfire emergency warning was issued, with authorities warning residents that they needed to “act immediately to survive”.

That warning has since been replaced by the watch and act alert.

The Nannup-Balingup Road has been closed between Maidment Bridge and Revelly Bridge.
