South Australian emergency and weather agencies have drawn on the experience of flood-hit Queensland to develop a website.
It collates social media messages from South Australia Police, the Country and Metropolitan Fire Services, State Emergency Service and the Bureau of Meteorology via Twitter, Facebook and RSS feeds.
The Alert SA website is based on a model that was developed by Queensland emergency services during extensive floods last year.
SA Police and Emergency Services Minister Jennifer Rankine said it would help South Australians plan for impending problems and deal with emergencies which hit.
“It’s about ensuring that during a time of crisis, during a time of an emergency, people get the right information when they need it,” she said.
“Knowing where to obtain information before an emergency is critical for people when planning and preparing. The website allows emergency services to reach as many people as possible, as quickly as possible with the right information.”
Reliance
Deputy Police Commissioner Gary Burns said Queenslanders had relied heavily on online information.
“The population relied on social media messages from police to stay informed and safe,” he said.
“At the height of the floods, Queensland police had 39 million exchanges in 24 hours on its social media site; the equivalent of 450 views per second.
“There’s no doubt that it was a turning point in the way emergency services communicate with the public.”
He said SA had seen the interstate experience and recognised the need to develop its own model.
“We are well aware that when a crisis hits speculation will take over in the absence of information [and] that can create extra and unnecessary pressure on resources,” he said.
