Electoral campaigns begin in Syria

Candidates in the capital, Damascus, and in the restive city of Homs have started meeting with people to talk about the issues citizens want the new parliament to address.

The face-to-face meetings are seen as crucial for candidates since they enable them to gather information from the people in order to later express their demands to the government.

“The candidate I will vote for should be capable of representing me in the parliament, speaking about my problems and solving them,” one Syrian man said.

“We exchanged viewpoints on several issues that concern us. We hope that the winning candidates will speak of the issues and problems at the parliament and find solutions,” said another.

In Homs, the nominees have launched briefing sessions to inform the voters about their plans. The campaigns revolve around a multitude of problems Syrians have been facing since a wave of unrest gripped the country in mid-March 2011.

In Damascus, large numbers of banners and posters indicate that the elections are drawing near.

According to the Syrian Interior Ministry, over 14 million Syrians are eligible to vote in the election, which will see 7195 candidates vying for 250 parliament seats.

“I will work on improving the economy and enhancing the living standards of the Syrians by increasing their salaries and constructing houses for the youth,” independent parliamentary candidate Mohamad Lu’ai Sari pledged.

The May 7 election is part of President Bashar al-Assad’s reform program, which was devised to end the crisis.

The election will be the first under the new constitution, which was approved in a national referendum in February and authorized the inclusion of multiple political parties in elections.

Syria is experiencing relative calm after the government and foreign-backed armed rebels agreed to a UN-backed ceasefire that went into effect on Thursday.
