Elderly woman rescued from burning home

An elderly woman has been rescued from the balcony of her burning Melbourne home which investigators believe was deliberately torched.

Emergency services were called to the house fire by the woman’s neighbours, who heard her screaming for help.

The fire that broke out on the double-storey home on Courtney Street, North Melbourne, at 4.30am (AEDT) on Friday is believed to have been deliberately lit.

The woman, aged in her 70s, was rescued from her top-floor balcony and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where she was treated for smoke inhalation.

The blaze is being treated as suspicious.
