Pensioners should go back to work because loneliness is more deadly than smoking, a senior Downing Street adviser said yesterday.
David Halpern claimed that strong social relationships in then workplace would help people to live longer.
Mr Halpern, who advises the Prime Minister on his ‘big society’ agenda, said that having ‘someone who loves you’ was a powerful predictor of whether an old person would live for a long time.
Home alone: To avoid solitary confinement, the elderly are being encouraged to continue working
In a presentation to a meeting attended
by Mr Cameron yesterday, Mr Halpern said: ‘Work matters, particularly
for older people, not just for money, but absolutely for social contact.
‘We know smoking is really bad for you. This (graph) is predicting
whether you’ re going to be dead in a certain number of years.
‘We know smoking is really bad for you, but much worse are things like social relationships.
Additional work will also enable the older generation to live within better means
‘If you have got someone who loves you, someone you can talk to if you
have got a problem, that is a more powerful predictor of whether you
will be alive in 10 years’ time, more than almost any other factor.
Certainly more than smoking.
‘It’s incredibly consequential for a lot of reasons.’
He told delegates that more than half of over 75s in the UK describe themselves as lonely ‘all or most of the time’.
Mr Halpern also suggested that the elderly should downsize their homes to free up housing stock.
He said: ‘A big issue we have is under-occupation of houses. We have more TVs than people in the house.
‘We have got not enough houses – actually we do have enough houses it’s just essentially they are lived in by older people.’
A report last year suggested there were 25 million empty bedrooms in the
country, and urged ministers to draw up proposals to encourage the
elderly couples to downsize and create more affordable family homes.
Mr Halpern heads up a small unit at the Cabinet Office, known as the Behavioural Insight Team and dubbed the ‘nudge unit’.

That is weet coming from PM and co who will retire early on big fat pensions.
Talk about being removed from reality. ‘Do as I say not what I do’.

I once volunteered to work in a hospital cafeteria. It was apparently the biggest hospital cafeteria in Australia. I was the youngest volunteer (40s) and all the rest were in their 60s or 70s. The place ran like clockwork. Could any of these people get a job in the paid workforce? Not in a million years.

Note – Halpern was a policy advisor to Bliar for seven years. This is not a conservative government. Repeat – this is not a conservative government.

Cameron will go down in history as the worst Prime Minister ever. When he has muppets like David Halpern advising him on his ‘white elephant’ the ‘Big Society’ Never mind the elderly being advised to get a job after decades of hard work, start considering the other 4 million younger people who need a job.
The only good that will come out of this muppet goverment is, they will not be in power after the next general election.

I agree, they should get out and about, but not for salary if they are on a pension anyway, don’t deprive those who have no other means of income, from working for a salary. Volunteer your time instead. Train to be a volunteer guide at a museum or stately home, volunteer at a local school teaching sewing, knitting, crafts, cooking and so on, use your skills which many modern parents don’t have, but which will be of benefit to youngsters. Become a reading helper in schools, work with struggling kids on a one to one basis listening to them read help them with creative writing and spelling. Volunteer for charities, there are so many ways to occupy your time in a social environment that will benefit your local communities. It doesn’t have to be every day, it could a few hours one day a week or once a fortnight. Lots ofcharities and organisations need help on adhoc basis, set up a local group of willing volunteers and offer your skills and time for community projects.

People of the age of 50 years old struggle to get jobs nowadays how on earth will older folk manage to compete for them. You can see what’s coming next the government will say if they don’t get a job for a few hours a day then they will deduct from their pensions for not trying hard enough.

I vote David Halpern ‘works’ until he is 95 as it is obvious nobody is going to love him

How many youngsters are desperate for work, not work-shy, desperate? How many disabled and sick people do you want to find work by removing their benefits, as though this will make them miraculously fit for work? How many jobs are being lost to workfare?
I suppose you could make all the oldies do workfare in order to get a pension and sanction them if they don’t? Seems fair. Would save money on the NHS and social care, when they drop dead from slave labour.
Welcome to the UK under Tory rule…

Do you think this is a hint that soon we will never be able to retire with a pension?
