POLICE and fire investigators are probing a fire at a unit that killed an elderly man in Melbourne’s southeast.
MFB and CFA firefighters were called to Gipps St, Mordialloc, about 12.45am yesterday and arrived to find neighbours and police had pulled the man from the doorway.
MFB commander Marcus Baker said firefighters arrived to find the dead man, believed to be in his 80s, in the driveway and the property well alight.
He said initial investigations suggested the intense blaze started in the lounge room.
“The windows were blown out. There was quite a lot of fire damage to that room and to the ceiling and roof space,” he said.
“I think quick work by the fire crews attending the scene kept it getting into the other (four adjoining) units.”
He said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the blaze.
Commander Baker said the cause of the fire – which resulted in an estimated $100,000 damage – was being investigated.
“We were unable to ascertain (if there was a smoke alarm) last night,” he said.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
