Elderly man dies at NSW beach

An elderly man has died in the surf at a remote beach on the NSW south coast.

Lifesavers were called to Bawley Point, between Ulladulla and Batemans’s Bay, at 7.30am (AEDT) on Friday after reports a man found floating face down had been pulled unconscious from the water.

They were unable to revive him, said Far South Coast Surf Life Saving duty officer Andrew Edmunds, who did not specify the man’s age.

The death comes after eight people were rescued from a rip, also on the south coast on Thursday.

The first rescue involved two men and a 15-year-old boy from Canberra who were holidaying at the North Head camping ground at Moruya Heads.

The teenager was winched out by helicopter and a 19-year-old man was helped by surfers before being brought to shore by volunteer lifesavers.

The other man, also aged 19, made it to shore on his own and was treated at the scene.

A short time later, lifesavers at Broulee pulled another five people from a rip.

Mr Edmunds said Moruya Heads was proving to be a dangerous black spot.

“We’ve been called there just about every day this week, and been involved in a number of serious rescues,” he said.

On Tuesday lifesavers rescued a family of three who were kayaking in the area and were sucked out to sea.
