‘Egypt’s Morsi faces another battle’

He also stressed that “no one and no institution is above the will of people”, promising that the new Egypt under his presidency will be “independent from foreign influence.”

“We will complete the journey in a civil state, a nationalist state, a constitutional state, a modern state,” said Morsi, addressing tens of thousands of people at Cairo’s iconic Liberation Square.

This comes as protests have been going on since the Egyptian junta dissolved the parliament dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s largest political party, earlier this month.

The junta also took control of the state budget and gave itself veto power on a new constitution, making the new president almost powerless through a recent constitutional declaration.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Waleed Al-Haddad, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, from Cairo, to further discuss the issue. The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Mohamed Morsi’s speech, I’m sure you heard it. It was a strong one. It was inspiring. But, tell us how much power will he end up with? Is it a hollow victory like some people are claiming?

Al-Haddad: Firstly, thank you very much for this opportunity to share with you and participate our feelings after the first speech of President Dr. Mohamed Morsi in Tahrir Square. This is the first elected president post-revolution, and he is the president who comes from the street, and he is now with the people in the streets.

This speech from Dr. Mohamed Morsi, our president, was inspired, actually the people you can see they are talking together about some words that had been mentioned in Dr. Mohamed Morsi’s speech regarding the power of the people, the nation is the main source for authority and legitimacy for the people.

It was prevented in the past to hear such words from the ex-regime and from the ex-president, Hosni Mubarak. They haven’t heard words like these words.

Dr. Mohamed Morsi told the people that he is the president for all Egyptians and his power comes from people not from the SCAF. He will have another battle in the coming days to receive his own power and authorities from SCAF.

As all people know now here in Egypt that there is the executive power now with the president, but we have also the legislation power which is still in SCAF’s hands. We will have another battle in order to receive all powers with the president and the parliament, and I think we will win.

The street will win. I’m not talking just about the Muslim Brotherhood but I’m talking about the street, the people, the momentum on the street, the different squares, not Tahrir Square only but the different squares in all Egyptian governerates. We will have our civilian state. We will go to the renaissance project in order to implement and to have our future, actually.

Press TV: Do you agree that he has to get other political groups behind him in order to get ultimately powers under his wing to exercise himself and all the promises that he has made and all the pledges he has made which we’re going to get into shortly?

Al-Haddad: Everybody here in Egypt and in any place in the world, they know that there is no word over the people’s word. Now SCAF is convinced that he will not have any competition with the street because first after the revolution and after Mubarak left his power to SCAF, SCAF this time know that no one can have any battle with the street because the street and the people always win this battle.

They will try to deliver the power to the president but it will take some time actually. They will try to have some authorities related to their position in the armed forces and their budget and something like this.

But, the president will have his power from the political players…also from the revolution and momentum in the street in different squares.

I think the president will have different meetings with political groups and different parties and also with parliament members in order to find a clear position, some sort of consensus among political players in order to have the power to face and problem and any confrontation with SCAF.

Press TV: Strong words in terms of the foreign policy, free from outside powers, free in his territory and free in his movements, capable of responding and preventing any assault or aggression against Egypt. Are these pledges going to be maneuvered on, are they going to be exercised by Mohamed Morsi when it comes to, for example, Israel, when it comes to the issue of Palestine, Gaza, et cetera?

Al-Haddad: When we are talking about foreign policy for Dr. Mohamed Morsi, Dr. Mohamed Morsi has experience at some visits and receives more than 200 delegations from different sides from the world.

Our foreign policy and freedom of justice party and also from the presidential program for Dr. Mohamed Morsi based, firstly, on return from the leading position for Egypt in our region.

We have a natural relation with the Arab countries, Islamic countries and the African dimension. We have normal relations with different parts of the world, but we are now working to have a balanced relation. We are not followers. We are a leading country in our area so we will have a balanced relation and optimal relation with different parts and countries in the world based on mutual interest and mutual respect, also.

Regarding the Israeli issue, we have the peace treaty and the Camp David accord. We are respecting all the treaties because it was made in the past by the Egyptian governments.

Now we are respecting but we are also calling the other side to respect. We have many “appreciations” in the peace treaty and the articles of the peace treaty from Israel.

Now, we are asking the comprehension peace, as we are calling, regarding our relation with Iran. We are open to have a new relation with Iran based, as I said, on mutual interest and mutual benefits and without any intervention in the internal issues of each country, to have our own sovereignty and also Iranian sovereignty.

We are in this region, in the Middle East; we have very big countries like Egypt, Turkey, Iran and others. Now, our rights to have a powerful, economical relations with different sites in this region and also to have an open relation with all countries in the world — with the United States, China , Europe, Africa.

It’s a big challenge for Dr. Mohamed Morsi to deal with the foreign policy in one dimension which is what is in the interest for Egyptian people, what is the will of the people, how to satisfy and achieve their needs.
