Egyptians protest outside parliament

On Sunday, protesters called for the dismissal of the interim government, accusing them of ignoring the revolution’s most basic demands.

The protest comes after members of parliament called for the resignation of the country’s military-appointed Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri and his government during a previous parliamentary session.

The parliament has decided to move toward withdrawing confidence in the prime minister and his cabinet.

This all comes just a day after the first presidential race since former President Hosni Mubarak’s overthrow in February 2011 kicked off.

Politicians from various political spectrums are expected to take part in the presidential elections slated for May 23 and May 24.

The authorities started on Saturday the process of holding its first-ever free presidential elections with candidates able to submit their applications.

Tensions between Egypt and the US have intensified after several foreigners accused of meddling in Egypt’s internal affairs were allowed to leave the country.

The 43 foreign and Egyptian activists, including 16 US citizens, were on trial for allegedly receiving illegal funds and running unlicensed NGOs in Egypt.

US authorities had also threatened to cut a USD 1.5 billion annual aid package to Egypt if the issue was not resolved.

Many Egyptians suspect that the US is instigating the recent unrest in the country, by funding civil society groups in Egypt.
