A leader in the flagship pro-Morsi coalition said that the latest decision by Saudi authorities to outlaw the Muslim Brotherhood is an attempt to save the coup project in Egypt which Saudi funded.
In an unprecedented escalation, Saudi Arabia has formally designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation on Friday.
Amr Adel, Al-Wassat Party leader and member of the pro-democracy National Alliance for Legitimacy, said in recent press statements that Saudi is trying to rescue the coup and its leader, Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, and support his weak position vis-à-vis the ongoing nationwide protests against him”.
Adel pointed out that Saudi’s decision “aims at protecting the Gulf monarchy from an upcoming revolution that will sweep all the Arab world, and to intimidate the supporters of the Egyptian revolution everywhere.”
He added that the withdrawal of ambassadors from Qatar is “proof of the powerful influence of the Doha-based Al-Jazeera channel which exposes the bloody coup and its leaders”. Saudi, Adel said, is “afraid of Al-Jazeera‘s influence in raising awareness of Gulf people regarding their confiscated rights and liberties.”
“Such decisions will not weaken Egyptian revolutionaries. They will remain steadfast till victory because they have a legitimate cause,” he said.
Adel explained that the Muslim Brotherhood as an organization does not have an official presence in Saudi Arabia “due to the repressive measures imposed by Saudi authorities against any political entity”.
