Egypt to announce referendum results

Egyptian authorities are to announce the results of a referendum on a new constitution drafted by the military-installed government.

The country’s electoral commission is to release the official results of the vote later on Saturday.

The government has described the two-day poll as a chance for people to show their support for the army’s overthrow of former President Mohamed Morsi in July.

The constitution, which is highly expected to receive the voters’ approval, includes measures that would ban the formation of religious political parties, allow prosecution of civilians in military courts, and also empower the army to appoint the defense minister and keep its budget beyond any civilian scrutiny.

Supporters of Morsi, who boycotted the vote, have described the referendum as a sham, alleging massive electoral fraud.

If approved, the new charter will replace the current constitution, which was passed under the Morsi administration in December 2012.

Meanwhile, pro-Morsi supporters are calling for further protests following a day of deadly clashes on Friday with security forces in the capital, Cairo. Three people died in the clashes.

The interior ministry also reported that 123 protesters were arrested in the capital and in other cities as people took to the streets to denounce the referendum.

In addition to the protest in Cairo, similar demonstrations were held in other parts of Egypt, including the northern coastal city of Alexandria, the city of Giza, the Nile Delta, the port city of Suez and the Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt has been experiencing anti-government protests on an almost daily basis since the ouster of Morsi, who was Egypt’s first democratically-elected president.
