nsnbc : Starting Saturday, Egypt has opened the Rafah border crossing between Egypt’s North Sinai province and Palestine’s Gaza strip in one direction to allow Palestinians to return to the coastal enclave.
Last time the Rafah border crossing was open was on March 6 when the crossing was opened in both directions for humanitarian cases, sick people as well as some students.
Egypt has kept the Rafah border crossing closed most of the time since October 2014, after a marked increase in attacks carried out by Islamist extremists in North Sinai province.
In 2014 the government in Cairo also accused the Palestinian, Muslim Brotherhood affiliated Hamas and its armed wing, the al-Qassam brigades of involvement in militant activities in Egypt.
Hamas leaders rejected the accusations even though some, senior Hamas leader Yahia Mousa warned that Hamas would pay dearly for interfering in Egypt’s internal affairs.
Independent observers could conclude that the previously rather small and obscure Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM) evolved into an Islamic State franchise and gained significant strength when it succeeded to organize Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood militants, elements of Hamas and its armed wing, foreign fighters from neighboring Libya, as well as some elements of Lebanon’s Hezbollah under one central command in Egypt under the name Wilayat Sinai.
In 2016, and during the present months of 2017, the relations between Hamas and the Egyptian government showed some signs of improvement, which has been reflected in a bigger frequency of border openings. According to figures by the United Nations, during 2016 the border crossing point of Rafah was opened 44 days, while in 2015, it was operational for only 21 days.
