“The Ministry [of Electricity] is studying several proposals to secure transmission towers, especially those with 500 KV voltage capacities, to curb the frequent targeting of the towers that incurred the state millions of pounds,” said Shaker during the Tuesday inauguration of a new power plant in Banha, north of Cairo.

He noted that several transmission towers nationwide are “under permanent security due to their importance to the national grid.”

Since last year, attacks on transmission towers, mobile operators and electricity transformers have been rampant amid the country’s energy crisis. The sabotage has inflicted losses of 477 million EGP ($62.5,) of which 350 million EGP are due to lost revenues from businesses, an official source at the Ministry of Electricity told Youm7.

On Monday, three bombs went off at a high voltage 220 KV transmission tower in Upper Egypt’s governorate of Aswan, cutting power to 14 villages, Youm7 reported.

On the same day, eight explosive devices took down three high voltage transmission towers in Egypt’s Delta governorate of Beheira.

The most high-profile bombing of this kind took place April 13, when two towers supplying the Egyptian Media Production City were bombed, which led to a power cut that forced several TV channels off air for hours.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab announced the formation of “a national committee for camera surveillance;” a decision hailed by Interior Ministry officials.
