Egypt MB supports ‘Islamic’ president

“The candidate that we support will not be a candidate who belongs to a particular Islamist movement, or we would have run ourselves,” Mohamed Badie, leader of Egypt’s Brotherhood, said in an interview with the group’s political party newspaper Freedom and Justice on Tuesday.

But “the candidate must have an Islamic background,” he added.

Badie went on to say that his group has not yet decided on a specific candidate to nominate for the presidency.

“In the end, the group’s advisory council will decide to support one of those candidates specifically,” Badie noted.

Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) emerged as the largest political bloc in Egypt’s parliament following legislative elections in the country and currently holds nearly 50 percent of seats in the newly elected parliament.

The group has harshly criticized Egypt’s junta-appointed government, charging that it has failed to address the country’s security and economic crises.

The current Egyptian government is led by Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri, a remnant of the US-backed Mubarak dictatorship who was appointed in November by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, Egypt’s ruling junta.

Though the Egyptian presidential election date is not yet clear, hopefuls will be able to register for the event as of March 10.
