“Is it the job of the army to restore democracy? Does Secretary Kerry accept Defense Secretary (Chuck) Hagel to step in and remove (US President Barack) Obama if large protests take place in America?” Gehad al-Haddad, a spokesman for Muslim Brotherhood, asked in a statement on Friday.
“Will the US army freeze the constitution and dismantle Congress and (the) Senate? Can they appoint a president that they solely choose?” the statement added.
On Thursday, Kerry said in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad that the Egyptian “military was asked to intervene by millions and millions of people, all of whom were afraid of a descent into chaos.”
The US official stopped short of calling the military ouster of Morsi a coup, adding that “the military did not take over, to the best of our judgment… to run the country. There’s a civilian government.”
The US law bans financial assistance to any country whose elected head of state is deposed in a military coup.
Supporters of Morsi are set to stage another massive demonstration in Cairo despite heavy security presence across the capital city later on Friday.
Egypt’s Interior Ministry has called on Morsi supporters to leave their protest camps in the capital, promising them a “safe exit”.
According to the Egyptian media, security forces have prepared a plan to stop the sit-in protests, but have not decided when to implement it, as Egypt’s military-backed cabinet is still hoping for a peaceful settlement of the turmoil.
Tension has intensified in Egypt since the removal of Morsi. On July 27, at least 150 people were killed and scores of others injured in clashes during rival demonstrations by the supporters and opponents of Morsi across the country.
