Egypt Launches Search for Nefertiti in Tut’s Tomb

nsnbc : The Egyptian Antiquities Ministry announced Thursday that it has begun the search for Nefertiti inside the 3,300 year-old tomb of Pharao Tutankhamun. Nefertiti’s whereabouts have long puzzled archaeologists and Egyptologists and her remains may very well be inside Tut’s tomb, believes a British expert.

In September Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damaty announced that he was convinced that there may lie a hidden chamber behind the tomb of Tutankhamun in Luxor. Thursday the Ministry announced that a search would be conducted that would last three days and that the results would be announced on Saturday.

The possible discovery of Nefertiti‘s final resting place is based on the theory of British Egyptologist Nicolas Reves who explored Tut’s tomb in September. Reves theorizes that Tuthankhamun was layed to rest in an ante-chamber in the tomb of Nefertiti because Tut died unexpectedly at the age of 19 and his burial had to be rushed.

Nicolas Reves based his theory on his study of high-resolution images of the tomb that showed that there were straight lines in Tut’s tomb which previously were hidden by stones, color and texture, indicating that there may be a sealed, yet undiscovered chamber.

Nefertiti war famous for her beauty, which is among others still visible in a 3,300 year-old bust. Nefertiti was the first or primary wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten who was the first and failed attempt to introduce monotheism in Egypt. The one god was, according to him Aten, whose sole representative Akhenaten, the Pharaoh was on Earth.

Akhenaten was succeeded by a Pharaoh named Smenkhare whom Reves believes to actually have been Nefertiti, and then by Tutankhamun. The entire family’s name was almost entirely censored from Egyptian historic annals after a military coup by general Horemb. The family ran into serious power struggles with the Osiris priesthood and other established priesthoods who refused to submit to the new monotheistic religion.
