‘Egypt junta after eliminating opponents’

Egyptian protesters have staged several massive rallies in different parts of the country condemning the junta’s violent acts, mass arrests and interfering in the presidential race.

Demonstrators have repeatedly accused the military council of trying to influence the country’s upcoming presidential elections from behind the scenes.

Many observers also believe the Presidential Elections Commission disqualified several candidates in order to keep the ones who were easy to control.

The mass protest comes after the Abbasieh massacre on May 2, 2012, in which 20 anti-junta protesters were killed and dozens of others were injured near the Defense Ministry building in Cairo.

Clashes erupted when assailants armed with rocks, clubs and firebombs attacked hundreds of protesters who had been camping out near the ministry for days, calling for an end to the military rule in the country.

Soldiers and police stopped the clashes nearly six hours after they began. They were accused of not intervening until after the deaths.

The military council took power in the aftermath of the last February revolution in Egypt that overthrew Western-backed dictator Hosni Mubarak.

The Egyptian public accuses the ruling junta of following in Mubarak’s tracks by resorting to violence against popular protests.

Egypt’s presidential election is scheduled to be held on May 23-24, and a run-off will follow on June 16-17, if necessary.
