Egypt intercepts convoys from Libya with ‘sophisticated weapons’ for insurgents in Sinai

CAIRO — Egypt has seized large shipments of weapons believed ordered by Al Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Security sources said the Egyptian Army intercepted several convoys of trucks with weapons from Libya intended for as many as 10,000 armed insurgents in Sinai.

Egypt has seized large amounts of weapons from Libya.

Egypt has recently intercepted large caches of weapons smuggled from Libya.

They said the trucks were headed for points near Alexandria along the Mediterranean coast as well as the Sinai Peninsula.

“These are sophisticated weapons, including missiles, that are being brought from Libya,” a source said.

The sources said thousands of assault rifles, mortars and mines have been seized since July 2013, when the military overthrew Egypt’s first Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi. They said Libyan weapons were used in major attacks on regime facilities over the last two months, including the Suez Canal.

On Oct. 19, a bomb was detonated at Egyptian intelligence headquarters in Ismailia next to the Suez Canal. The sources said the bombing, which reflected the expansion of Islamist insurgency, did not disrupt ship traffic in the canal.

The increase in Libyan weapons for Egyptian insurgents was attributed to
the closure of the Sinai border with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. The sources
said the closure resulted in a large amount of weapons ordered by Hamas and
its militia allies delivered to Islamists in Egypt.

“You can find many of these weapons in Ismailia,” the source said.

The sources said hundreds of Al Qaida-aligned fighters were believed to
have escaped Sinai for the African mainland. They said the current Egyptian
Army offensive was a key reason for the decline of the insurgency presence
in Sinai, estimated at up to 10,000 fighters.
