nsnbc : The United Nations Security Council, on Saturday, failed at the attempt to condemn recent failed coup in Turkey, after Egypt, reportedly, objected against a call on all parties to respect the “democratically elected government” of Turkey. Egypt’s position was that the Security Council was in no position to determine whether any government had been democratically elected or not.
The statement, drafted by the United States, condemned the violence and unrest in Turkey and called on all parties to respect the democratically elected government of Turkey. The statement also expressed grave concern about the situation in Turkey and urged the concerned parties to show restraint, avoid any violence or bloodshed and called for an urgent end to the crisis and return to rule of law.
Egypt agreed in principle but objected against the statement, stressing that the UNSC is in no position to determine whether any government had been democratically elected or not. Egypt succeeded at blocking the adoption of the statement. UNSC Statements have to be adopted with the concurrent vote of all 15 Council members while UNSC Resolutions require the concurrent vote of all five permanent Council members (P5).
Although, an illegal “gentleman’s agreement” among the P5 has led to the implementation of resolutions without the concurrent vote of the P5, as it was the case with UNSC Resolution 1973 (2011) that led to the war against Libya. Egypt has repeatedly criticized the UN for its failure to prevent wars and compared the UN with the League of Nations who failed at protecting smaller nations from the devastation that was unleashed by greater powers.
The United States initially also criticized the ouster of Islamist Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi by a people-powered military coup in Cairo, after some 14 millions had gone into the streets and demanded that Morsi either step down or begin to talk in earnest with the opposition. Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi would later stress that both Turkey and the USA, and others, were behind the so-called Arab Spring that caused the disasters in Libya, Syria and Egypt. In 2013 al-Sisi gave an interview with the American journalist Larry Weissman, saying:
“The people of Egypt are aware of the fact that the USA has stabbed Egypt in the back with the Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi. It is nothing that Egypt will easily forget, or forgive”.
The details about this weekend’s failed coup in Turkey remain sketchy at best. President R. Tayyip Erdogan as well as the leftist Patriotic Party – Turkey accused the US-based Turkish cleric Fetullah Gülen and the Gülenist Hizmet movement. Erdogan demanded that the US extradite Gülen. Gulen and Hizmet have consistently be linked to Turkey’s deep State, the CIA and NATO-linked intelligence. Most foreign observers agree that the failed coup has further strengthened Erdogan, the deterioration of Turkey’s secular constitution, and Erdogan’s push for a unitary semi-dictatorial presidency.
