Egypt army tightens security in Cairo

On Friday, the army and police forces were deployed across the capital including near Rabaa el-Adawiya Mosque in Nasr City where hundreds of supporters of ousted Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, have been killed in clashes with security forces in recent days.

That security forces were reportedly positioned near Defense Ministry and the Ittihadeya presidential palace in Heliopolis district which are near the Rabaa el-Adawiya Mosque.

Moreover, the country’s army deployed tanks and barbed wire around Tahrir Square in central Cairo.

Supporters of Morsi, are expected to pour into the streets following the Friday Prayers later in the day, calling for the reinstatement of Egypt’s first democratically elected president as well as the release of Muslim Brotherhood leaders.

This comes after a pro-Morsi coalition known as the National Coalition to Support Legitimacy called on the Egyptians to hold “Friday of Martyrs” demonstrations across the country.

Meanwhile, the army has imposed a curfew from seven o’clock in the evening to six o’clock in the morning in over a dozen governorates across the North African country including Cairo, Alexandria and Giza.

Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since July 3, when the army toppled Morsi, suspended the constitution and dissolved the parliament. The army also appointed the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mahmoud Mansour, as the new interim president.

Since July 3, thousands of supporters of ousted Egyptian president have staged nationwide rallies to demand Morsi’s reinstatement.
