Ecuadorean president reshuffles cabinet

The Agriculture and Defense ministers have swapped positions. New politicians were also introduced to run the ministries of labor, economic and social inclusion, social development coordination and human talent.

During a ceremony held on Monday, Correa appointed the country’s Defense Minister Javier Ponce as the new agriculture minister, while his position was filled by former Agriculture Vice Minister Miguel Carvajal, Xinhua reported.

“We count on you, we trust your leadership capability and we expect great results. We have to make things extraordinarily good because the motherland can’t wait,” Correa told the cabinet.

New politicians, including Juan Francisco Vacas, Doris Solis, Richard Espinosa, and Augusto Espinosa were also introduced to run the ministries of labor, economic and social inclusion, social development coordination and human talent, respectively.

Correa also named Viviana Bonilla as new governor of the coastal Guayas province, which is considered the second most populous state and an economic hub of Ecuador.

Correa, whose five-year term will end in February 2013, had already introduced a major reshuffle by appointing 15 ministers last November.

The socialist president is extremely popular in the South American country, mostly due to high government spending on public services and infrastructure and his persisting opposition to US domination in the Latin American region.
