‘Ecuador mulls Assange asylum request’

Correa said on Thursday that he could not accept a political persecution for the ideas Mr. Assange expressed, and noted that if he has committed any other type of crimes through his website, then those charges should be brought forth against him.

In an attempt to avoid being extradited to Sweden, Assange sought refuge in Ecuador’s embassy in London and applied for a political asylum on Monday.

Earlier on Thursday, the Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino confirmed that Assange had arrived at the Embassy and formally requested for a political Asylum.

Speaking to reporters Patino said that Ecuador was analyzing the request, but “the decision would be made with respect for norms and principles of international law.”

Wikileaks founder was accused of committing rape and other sexual crimes after the whistleblower made US’ “secret” and “top secret” documents publicly available on his Wikileaks website despite intense pressures from the American authorities to stop him.

In a statement published on Ecuador’s London embassy’s official website, the South American country stated that Assange’s application for asylum was passed on to the relevant department in Quito.

“While the department assesses Mr. Assange’s application, Mr. Assange will remain at the embassy, under the protection of the Ecuadorian government,” it added.
