The Guinean Health Ministry says the Ebola outbreak in the country is almost under control as the number of deaths caused by the disease slows dramatically.
Rafi Diallo, a ministry spokesman, made the remarks on Tuesday, saying that the latest toll from 159 confirmed and suspected cases of Ebola stood at 106 since the outbreak began in Guinea in February.
“The number of new cases has fallen rapidly,” Diallo said, adding, “Once we no longer have any new cases… we can say that it is totally under control.”
The spokesman stated that 37 people had recovered from the disease.
Meanwhile, The Gambia banned all flights from Ebola-stricken Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in West Africa, staff at Banjul International Airport said on condition of anonymity.
“This decision by the Gambian authorities has left prospective passengers travelling to Banjul… stranded in these West African countries,” an airport official said.
There is currently no known cure for Ebola, whose symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding.
The virus spreads through direct contact with blood, feces and sweat. It can also be spread through sexual contact or the unprotected handling of contaminated corpses.
Discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976, Ebola remains one of the world’s most virulent diseases that kills between 25 to 90 percent of those who fall sick.
